Every summer, Lacanau hosts one of Europe's biggest surfing events: the Caraïbos Lacanau Pro. Created in 1979, this international competition is part of the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series and attracts the best male and female surfers on the circuit to the Gironde coast. The event takes place in the middle of summer, usually between late July and early August.
OCEAN NEWS
Here, we live to the rhythm of the tides and the wind in the pine trees.
The spirit of Camping Liberté Lacanau is all about sharing our dawn surf sessions, our secret bike rides along the cycle paths and those little moments when time stands still. Think of this page as your logbook so you don't miss out on anything local life has to offer, between the power of the ocean and the wild beauty of our Médoc forest.
Swimming in Lacanau Lake
While the Atlantic Ocean thrills, Lacanau Lake offers a moment of absolute calm. A few minutes by bike from the campsite, the Moutchic spot reveals flat, translucent water, bordered by fine sand and reeds. Here, you can forget the waves and enjoy a more intimate and wild atmosphere. Hire a paddleboard or canoe to explore the secret coves, where the forest seems to plunge directly into the water. Between dips, settle down in the shade of the pine trees for a nap or an impromptu picnic.
The Vélodyssée at the end of the handlebars
Leave your car behind during the holidays. The legendary Vélodyssée cycle route passes right by the campsite, opening up the Médoc forest to you. Cycle in the cool shade of the pine trees, lulled by the scent of resin and the tranquillity of nature.
The route offers a variety of pleasures without any effort. To the south, the track leads gently to Moutchic for a break by the lake. To the west, it takes you directly to the warm sand of Lacanau-Océan.
THE CALL OF THE OPEN SEA
Lacanau has that special energy you find in wide open spaces where you feel small in the face of the Atlantic. Here, surfing isn't just about performance, but about enjoying the salt water and the sun beating down on the dunes.
We like to set off early, when the mist is still rising from the water and the wind is calm. It's the ideal time to get in the water, far from the hustle and bustle, and enjoy the pure sensation of gliding. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, our beaches offer sandbanks for all levels.
